Before counting a hub’s ports, list what you need to connect: keyboard and mouse, storage, one or more monitors, and perhaps a charger. That list is more useful than an “all-in-one” label when the laptop cannot use every advertised function.
Begin with the laptop port
USB-C describes a connector. A hub using native DisplayPort Alternate Mode requires the computer to provide that video mode. Connecting the hub does not give a data-only port native video output. DisplayLink docks use a different approach and need compatible software. Dell’s docking guide distinguishes these options.
| What you need | What to verify |
|---|---|
| USB peripherals or storage | The data capabilities of the computer, hub and individual output. |
| HDMI or DisplayPort | The video technology, computer support, resolution and refresh rate together. |
| Laptop charging | Charging support on that port, power delivered to the computer and a suitable charger. |
| Two independent displays | A supported configuration for the exact computer and operating system. |
VESA documents DisplayPort over USB-C, which can combine video, data and power. Actual features still depend on the equipment and cable. Keep your laptop’s exact model to hand when checking its manual.
Input power is not necessarily laptop charging power
Look for the power available to the computer, not only the charger’s input rating printed on the hub. Allow for what the accessory itself needs, and compare the documented output with your laptop’s requirements. Check whether the charger and cable are included before comparing the total purchase price.
“4K” is not a complete display specification
Request the supported combinations of resolution, refresh rate, number of monitors and operating system. A claim of 4K without a refresh rate does not let you compare two accessories. Identify which USB-C socket is for charging input, which carries data and which, if any, supports video.
- Confirm the capabilities of the laptop’s exact port.
- Identify the function of every port you plan to use.
- Check extended-display support, not only mirrored output.
- Include the correct charger and cables in your budget.
- Keep the return conditions if the seller cannot document compatibility.
These checks are intended to narrow your purchase to a compatible connection. We do not infer measured speed or display quality from the number of connectors, and we do not describe this article as a hands-on test.
