DDR4 or DDR5 RAM: check compatibility before buying

Buying guidance by Argentofertas. Check specifications and compatibility against the manufacturer documentation.

How we select and review information

Start with the exact computer or motherboard model. A memory offer is useful only if it matches the system requirements; the capacity in a listing title is not enough to choose.

Generation and form factor

DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. Use your system manual to identify the required generation and form factor, DIMM or SO-DIMM. The Corsair RAM FAQ explains the incompatibility between generations.

Compare the complete package

Check capacity per module and the number of modules included. A 32 GB listing may group a single 32 GB module and a two-module 16 GB kit. Compare the price of the same configuration and check how many slots are free.

Speed and compatibility

The advertised speed depends on the system and its settings. Check motherboard and processor support; do not change BIOS settings simply to match a listing number. Corsair identifies module placement, profiles and hardware compatibility as relevant to the resulting memory speed.

Buying checklist

  • Computer model and supported memory generation.
  • Form factor and included module count.
  • Capacity per module and available slots.
  • Price, shipping and warranty for the selected option.
